Is flow the secret to ending your algae battle?

In today’s video, we are performing some "major surgery" on the 210-gallon reef tank to tackle a persistent algae problem. While most people think flow kills algae directly, the truth is it’s all about detritus management. If fish waste (poo) settles in your rockwork, it dissolves and fuels localized algae outbreaks right where you don’t want them.

I’m replacing my old, broken Sea Swirl with a custom-built DIY PVC manifold. By using a combination of spare parts, Lock-Line, and fresh plumbing, I’m creating four targeted flow points to blast dead spots and keep waste suspended so the skimmer can actually do its job.

In this video, we cover:

The Science of Waste: Why ammonia, nitrate, and phosphates aren't the only things to worry about.

The Detritus Trap: Identifying the "dead zones" behind rockwork where algae thrives.

The Build: Scavenging parts and gluing a custom manifold with individual valves for total control.

The Results: Redirecting flow to the bottom corners and back glass to keep the tank cleaner.

It’s not a magic cure, but it’s a massive step toward a healthier, more manageable reef.
