When Is “Private” Actually Private In The Blockchain Space?
Newly published court documents reveal that an anonymous venture capital firm identified as “Investor F” sought to have evidence redacted from the first court hearing for the dispute between the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Telegram. On Feb, 18, Investor F asserted that emails directly requested by the SEC contain “confidential and commercially sensitive documents” detailing the firm's strategic considerations regarding prospective cryptocurrency investments and custody solutions.
Gemcoin Creator In Deep Trouble
Steve Chen, who is the mastermind behind the $147 million Gemcoin cryptocurrency scheme, has admitted to wire fraud and tax evasion in a plea agreement. The 62-year-old Southern California resident agreed that he and other co-conspirators fraudulently promoted a cryptocurrency called Gemcoin (or Gem Coins) that helped fleece $147 million from 70,000 victims.
Bitcoin Miner Ties Hashrate To National Security
Bitcoin mining startup Layer1 Technologies has begun operations at its West Texas facility, with an ambitious roadmap to secure 30% of the hash rate. Layer1, which raised $50 million in November from Thiel, Shasta Ventures and Digital Currency Group, said it has now brought multiple 2.5-megawatt liquid-cooled mining containers online.
Coinbase Can Now Issue Visa Cards
Coinbase is now a principal member of Visa. This will allow it to issue debit cards without relying on third parties. The membership is an evolution of Coinbase’s current relationship with Visa, with the cryptocurrency exchange providing a Visa-based debit card. Called Coinbase Card, it allows customers residing in the European Union or European Community to spend multiple cryptocurrencies. While the card itself can function globally, it cannot be ordered by people residing outside of the supported areas.
