Long before modern prisons, Britain turned to a grim solution—abandoned ships transformed into floating prisons. Moored along the River Thames, these “prison hulks” housed thousands of convicts in brutal, overcrowded conditions. In this video, the last of the Lost & Found series, I talk to Dr Anna McKay (Historian of Prisoners in the British Maritime World) about the dark history of these floating jails: why they were used, what life was like onboard, and how they became a symbol of punishment and neglect in 18th and 19th century Britain. Some of my Thames mudlarking finds could be related to prison hulks. This is the tenth and last of the Lost and Found Series.
