Poker Flat Recordings returns to its dub-focused series with Poker Flat Dubs Vol. 04, drawing together a set of cuts that lean into space, reduction and a certain quiet insistence on groove. Across eleven tracks, familiar names around the label’s orbit revisit and reshape material into versions that favour patience over immediacy, letting elements breathe and settle into a steady pulse.
Steve Bug and Langenberg open with “Late Harvest”, easing in with a measured swing, low-end weight and finely trimmed chords that hover just above the rhythm. Greg Gow’s “Minister Of Music” follows with a tougher edge, its looped motif circling tightly while percussion lands with a dry, functional clarity. Mihai Popoviciu’s “Understand” moves in a subtler direction, built on a gently rolling bassline and small melodic hints that surface and recede without fully declaring themselves. On “It’s Time (Edwin Oosterwal Dub)”, Steve Bug and Cle’s material is stripped back to its structural core, where Oosterwal lets delays trail off into negative space while the groove keeps a quiet momentum. Joeski’s “Drift Within” brings a slightly more organic feel, its drums loose but controlled, with a bass figure that nudges things forward rather than driving them outright. Hannes Bieger and Sailor & I’s “Chemistry (Dub)” reframes the original into something more internal, suspending fragments of melody within a restrained, late-night framework.
Cassy’s “Full On Dub Mix” of “Chord Cluster” by Steve Bug and Langenberg shifts the track into a denser rhythmic environment, the chords teased apart and reassembled against a more insistent kick, yet still held in check. youANDme’s “Pattern Of Greed (Dub Mix)” keeps its focus low to the ground, its progression unfolding through minor shifts in tone and texture rather than any overt change. Ian Pooley’s remix of Eva Be’s “Delight” introduces a slightly warmer touch, its chords rounded and fluid, sitting comfortably within the compilation’s overall restraint without breaking its mood.
Josh Butler’s “Movement” carries a subtle sense of lift, not through dramatic builds but via the interplay of groove and a carefully placed vocal fragment that never quite resolves. Closing the collection, Steve Bug and Langenberg return with “Paper Stabs”, a track that feels almost skeletal in its construction, sharp chord hits and a steady rhythm forming a concise ending point.
As with the previous volumes, the emphasis here lies in detail and control, each track circling its own idea without excess, connected by a shared understanding of how much can be achieved by holding back just enough.
