Growing an Ecosystem from an Algae Cookie

Life in Jars? Video 3 months ago

Description

In this video we are exploring if it is possible to turn an algae cookie into an ecosystem. In other words, is it possible to take a completely desiccated bit of ecosystem, rehydrate it, and see the emergence of lifeforms? Quickly after adding water to this disc of dried out algae we saw the emergence of many bacteria, and some other microbes as well. Over time, as expected, it was the algae that started to become dominant, with some pretty Scenedesmus colonies, as well as diatoms, Chroococcus, Euglenids, Cosmarium, Pandorina, Eudorina, ciliates, flagellates and maybe even the cyanobacteria Merismopedia.
Interesting!
