OK, so you just dropped your expensive smartphone after an aggressive duck waddled out of the bushes and startled you. Relax, it's happened to the best of us. The phone isn't under warranty, and you really can't afford a new one. What do you do? You could take it in to one of the manufacturer's authorized service depots for repair, but that will wind up costing you half of what the stupid thing is worth. There are cheap replacement screens for sale on the web, but you can't be sure that the phone will work with one of those. But, it's cheap enough where you're tempted to try it yourself... if you can even get into the thing without a PhD in mechanical engineering. Stuff used to be so easy to fix.


It's no accident that performing repairs on things has become more difficult. Western society has become much disposable, whether it wants to be or not. Why is it so hard to fix smartphones? Why is it so hard to fix new cars? Do you have the right to fix your stuff without having to pay exhorbatent service rates at a facility that the manufacturer has approved? You bought it, you should be able to handle repairs however you want, right?
