In March 2026 I set out with a group of volunteers from Project Redsands on the Lady Emz II into the Thames Estuary to visit the eerie Red Sands Towers — a group of abandoned WWII Maunsell sea forts standing alone in the water.
Built during World War II, these structures were designed to defend Britain from air raids and naval attacks. Today, they sit rusting in the sea, creating one of the strangest and most atmospheric locations in the UK.
In this video, the volunteers from Project Redsands spend a day restoring Gun Tower One. There is a lot of work to be done! If you would like to get involved, whether that is by volunteering, donating funds or materials please get in touch by visiting the Project Redsand CIO Facebook page! Or alternatively message me and I will put you in touch.
I had such a great day on the forts meeting the team and I also got a chance to explore what remains of these incredible structures, and experience what it’s really like being out there surrounded by nothing but open water.
From their wartime history to their later use as pirate radio stations, the Red Sands Forts have a story that few people know about.
Would you visit a place like this?
