Seven months after becoming a widow, I got an email from director Ryan White with three scenes I’d never seen before from our documentary, “Come See Me in the Good Light.”
Can you imagine what that’s like? To open an inbox and find more time? Three small portals back into a life I would give anything to sit inside again.
People often ask why Andrea and I let cameras in during what became our last year together. We did it because we figured out how to turn a ‘bad hand’ into a magic trick. We wanted to show people how.
What I didn’t foresee, though maybe Andrea did, was me sitting alone at my laptop, pressing play and weeping over moments I didn’t know I’d get back. Souvenirs from the land of the loved.
This deleted scene was from the first and only flight we took in Andrea’s final five years. The trip was taken to spend a few days by the water and finally meet Abby and Glennon in person. We surfed and skateboarded and talked and laughed deeply for hours on end.
After we got home, Andrea’s cancer marker dropped to the lowest it had ever been. Joy is medicine. I have the labs to prove it.
If you’ve been meaning to watch or share Come See Me in the Good Light, now is the moment. As we head toward the Oscars, this film is doing what we hoped it would. Not just moving people, but rearranging them.
