Description
I got up before sunrise on the 5th of July to take Skye outside of our Winnebago Travato camper van for a potty break. Dungeness campground was eerily silent in stark contrast to the 4th of July festivities and brisk wind last night. The wind was calm, the clouds were parting revealing a cobalt blue sky and Diane was still sound asleep, so I decided to take Skye for a walk through the wetlands meadow to watch the sunrise and reflect on how fortunate we are to be Americans and to live here in Sequim, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula in our retirement.
Background:
This was our first time camping at Dungeness Campground, which is walking distance from our house about 1.2 miles away. We often walk or drive to this Clallam County, Dungeness Recreation Area park, to take Skye for walks on the many trails through meadows and woods and along the bluff overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. My hope was to watch the Port Townsend 4th of July fireworks display, launched from a barge from the bluff trail and get some amazing videos and photos of our country’s 250th birthday celebration. Turns out that the 14-mile distance as a crow flies is too far to capture the colors and sounds of fireworks. That said, just about everything else during our 1-night camping experience at Dungeness Campground couldn’t have been better!
