Description
Among fossil shark teeth, the snaggletooth shark has one of the most distinctive forms, easily distinguishable from other species by its course serrations and sail-like shape. Commonly called Hemis, which is short for the scientific name of Hemipristis serra, these fossil teeth are found in many places and interestingly enough there is a modern relative still alive in the Indian ocean. This particular tooth comes from Summerville SC which is just to the northwest of Charleston and I found it 15 to 20 years ago in one of my favorite creeks. The color is magnificent and its really big for this species in the Charleston area, with the largest reaching sizes around 2 inches. The preservation is amazing with no damage to speak of. One of my favorite Hemi finds ever!
