Everyone is constantly waiting for the next news story about a melted 16-pin power connector on an RTX 5090, but a catastrophic failure just popped up that completely flips that on its head.
A Zotac RTX 5090 Solid Edition literally went up in smoke just five minutes into a gaming session, popping, crackling, and shutting the whole system down. The twist? The 12V-2x6 power cable was completely untouched and perfectly intact.
Instead, the severe burn marks are concentrated right at the bottom of the card on the PCIe fingers and the motherboard slot itself. While a definitive answer requires a full teardown, experts are pointing away from the power delivery entirely. The leading theory is a structural failure where heavy GPU sag has caused the multilayer PCB to subtly crack, fracturing traces, and instantly causing a massive electrical short.
Could this be a manufacturing defect, long-term physical stress from a massive cooler, or a simple installation oversight? Time will tell, but it is a stark reminder that power adapters are not the only thing you need to worry about with a flagship GPU monster.
