Managed to record a couple of videos in the midst of new album tracking & tour prep! "Catastrophist" is from Trivium's album 'What The Dead Men Say', & it's quite a tough one.
Truthfully, I actually have a lot of thoughts about this song (moreover, some of this era of Trivium's drum parts in general). In this case, the entire mid-section: You'll notice I do doubles for the entire double bass part - a technique I'm not fond of, & really only pull out when I absolutely have to. Although my singles are quick enough to nail this on a good day (it's in triplet, but it's equivalent to 16th notes at roughly 225 bpm, for quite a long period of time), being able to do something "on a good day" simply isn't good enough to me when you have to do it night after night on tour. It has to be doable everyday - consistently. So.... doubles made the most sense here (unfortunately).
All I'll say is that: This is a very difficult song on drums, & frankly --- I'm not even playing it exactly like the album. I made alterations to a handful of parts to make them more realistic / consistently playable (especially at this dynamic level). I'm personally not fond of writing parts that I can't pull off live, but I know that that seems to go by the wayside in a lot of music these days. So all I can do is learn something to the best of my ability, & work hard to do it justice day after day on the road. That's what I've always done, & I will continue to do so!
All that aside, this is a pretty sick song, & makes for a pretty cool drum video. I also like doing drum videos for songs that are tough for me, because prior to tracking them, I basically always drill the heck out of them. So it's a lot of good practice, & helps extend the comfort zone for something that's generally challenging.
