Currently no one knows how long the original engine, transmission, battery, or electric motor on a Toyota or Honda will last if all maintenance is done thoroughly and there is no abuse, as even engines and transmissions with 1,000,000 miles that have been thoroughly taken care of show little signs of wear.
So, just for fun, I did a calculation for how much my future Honda Clarity will save over its lifetime compared to a very-basic American car, assuming it lasts 10,000,000 miles with just preventative maintenance, my lineage drives 10,800 miles per year forever, electricity stays at $0.12/kWh forever, gas stays at $4/gal forever, vehicle registration fees stay the same forever, insurance fees stay the same forever, and maintenance fees stay the same forever, all in inflation-adjusted dollars.
