Winter Bushwalking Tips: Layering, Snow Camping & Safety | ABC Radio Interview

Description

Winter might not seem like prime bushwalking weather, but plenty of experienced hikers reckon it's actually the best Australian season of all. In this ABC Radio interview with Rae Johnston from 702 ABC Sydney, I chat about how to prepare for winter hikes -- and why you shouldn't let the cold put you off.

We cover the three-layer system (base, mid and shell layers) and why layering is your best friend for managing body temperature on the track.

I share my "be bold, start cold" approach, plus practical safety considerations that are easy to overlook in winter -- particularly how much earlier sunset creeps up on you compared to the warmer months.

We also get into snowshoeing and snow camping for those wanting to take things further, along with why it's worth heading out with someone experienced (or booking a registered guide through Kosciuszko National Park) when you're in alpine terrain.

Plus, some of my favourite winter walking destinations -- from whale watching along the NSW coast to escaping the heat in the Northern Territory and Tasmania -- and a few personal tricks for staying warm overnight, including the preheated sock trick and a hot water bottle hack that's changed my camping game.

Whether you're after a fire trail stroll or a multi-day winter adventure, there's a flavour of bushwalking for everyone.
