How to dispose of a PLB Personal Locator Beacon

Lotsafreshair Podcast 20 days ago

Description

Before you dispose of your personal locator beacon, there's one critical step you must not skip -- removing the battery. In this 30-second video, I show you exactly how to remove the battery from the Ocean Signal RescueMe PLB1, step by step.

Why does this matter? PLBs that end up in landfill can inadvertently activate, sending search and rescue teams on costly wild goose chases -- and the lithium battery poses a real fire and environmental hazard.

Please don't bin your PLB.

A quick heads-up: removing the battery yourself renders the unit non-operational and voids the warranty. Ocean Signal are very clear that once disassembled by an unauthorised technician, the PLB should never be relied on in an emergency again -- so only do this if you're disposing of it or using it as a demo unit, as I am.

For the full disposal process -- including deregistering your beacon with AMSA and disposing of the battery (or replacing it) and components responsibly -- head to the full guide on the blog.
