Most of us grew up on nursery rhymes. We know they aren’t real. But a lot of us still believe a few “nursery rhymes” about marriage, and they’re quietly steering our relationships off the road.
In this message from the RPM series, Ed Young walks through five lies we believe about love and marriage, and what God’s Word says instead.
1. “The order doesn’t matter.” First comes love, then comes marriage. The old rhyme actually gets the order right. God designed sex for marriage and marriage for a lifetime: “a man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). When we rearrange God’s order, including moving in together first, we don’t get a better version of marriage. God’s way isn’t a “no.” It’s a “wait.”
2. “I’m running out of time.” The biological clock, the cultural clock, the comparison clock. Social media makes everyone’s life look like a wedding highlight reel. Ed’s advice: go slow and get to know. Contentment is something you learn (Philippians 4:12).
3. “I can fix them.” All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t do it, and neither can you. You can’t fix your spouse, and they can’t fix you. Only Jesus heals what’s broken.
4. “Marriage will cure my loneliness.” We’re made for connection with people, but there’s a part of us only God can fill. When we put divine pressure on a human relationship, it cracks.
5. “Marriage will solve my problems.” Marriage can be wonderful, but it’s not a dream 24/7. What if marriage is more for your sanctification than your satisfaction? And if you’re single, your season isn’t a waiting room. It’s an opportunity to serve.
Whether you’re single, dating, living together, or married, the invitation is the same: do it God’s way. Do dating, sex, and marriage God’s way, because God’s way is the real way.
