How We’ve Stayed Married 44 Years | Ed & Lisa Young

Description

Can a marriage really go the distance, even after you’ve hit every bump in the road? Ed and Lisa Young have been married 44 years and together for 50. They still disagree. The feelings still come and go. And they’ve experienced all 10 of the common markers for divorce. In this final message of the RPM series, they share the 4 things that have kept them together, and why any couple can do the same.

“Your Carrera attracted me, but I married a Corolla.” Like the most reliable car on the road, a lasting marriage isn’t flashy. It’s simple, consistent, and built to go the distance. But no car goes anywhere on flat tires. Here are the 4 wheels every marriage needs:

1. Alignment. “Make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love” (Philippians 2:2). Ed and Lisa gave Jesus the keys as kids, and keeping Christ at the center is how they stay aligned with God and with each other. Set your priorities ahead of time, because feelings follow commitment. You don’t feel your way into a great marriage.

2. Communication. Marriage is like learning a new language and culture. From Lisa’s jigsaw puzzles to Ed’s fishing trips, they show how to put yourself in your spouse’s shoes, and why “Can we talk about this?” is one of the healthiest sentences in a marriage.

3. Pressure. Illness, loss, money, disappointment, and who makes the call. Every marriage faces pressure. The question is how you handle it together.

4. Reconciliation. Make your marriage a forgiveness contest. “Bear with each other and forgive one another… forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:13). Sometimes the most important words are “I’m sorry. I was wrong. Will you forgive me?”

Whether you’re dating, engaged, newly married, or decades in with a flat tire or two, it’s never too late to start. Your marriage isn’t too far gone.

If you’ve never given Jesus the keys to your life, you can do that today. Let Him take the wheel.
