Description
“why don’t you just stop roller skating already?” that’s a comment I’ve received a lot after sharing a video of all my worst falls. here’s the plot twist though: that same sport everyone told me to give up on is the one that made me a us national champion, helped me find my community, and created a new career path for me. Winning open b creative solo at us nationals in 2025 with my marie antoinette routine, is one of the proudest moments of my life. 🥇🎂✨
and for anyone wondering why we skate without safety gear: artistic roller skating, much like figure skating or gymnastics, requires complete mobility and precise control over the entire body. a helmet, for example, adds significant weight that shifts your center of balance during spins and jumps, which can lead to strain injuries. in addition, the most common injuries in our discipline are ankle related, and there is no protective equipment that effectively prevents those. proper fall technique and consistent strength training matter far more than padding ever could. contact sports such as hockey or roller derby require full protective gear because of the physical impact involved. If you are a beginners or practice those skate disciplines, gear is absolutely essential, but in artistic skating it can restrict movement and, for many athletes, create a mental block that works against you.
and that’s the thing, falling isn’t the opposite of being good at something, it’s part of it. every skater you love has hit the ground more times than they could ever count, and that’s exactly why they’re so good. so no, i’m not quitting.
to anyone being told to quit the thing they love: get back up. i’ve never been a quitter and i’m not about to start now 🛼💪🏻✨
and for all my friends currently at US Nationals: take a deep breath, enjoy the experience, and be proud for how far you’ve come 🤍
