Description
In this clip from President Hamza Yusuf’s remarks at the 2017 launch event for Renovatio, the journal of Zaytuna College, he shares his reflections on the importance of Islamic scholarship — and what is lost with its decline.
“It is our contention that, in essence, the foundations of the Abode of Islam are sound, but the house that harbors this civilization has fallen into deep dereliction. It is in need of renovation, not reformation,” wrote President Yusuf in “Why Renovatio?,” his introduction to a publication unlike other academic journals.
An offshoot of Zaytuna’s traditional education, Renovatio celebrates clear thought and lucid language. It has cultivated a loyal readership of not just academics, but an educated public. It brings conversations about faith into the public discourse and invites contributors to make a persuasive argument for their ideas with clarity and with the adab characteristic of the Islamic tradition.
