Why are people mean?

What’s really behind mean behavior?

In this video, I’m sharing a simple (and fun) way I teach kids one of the most important social skills they’ll ever learn: understanding why people are mean.

I filmed this in my studio and included a special moment with my son Jackson. Together, we walk through a framework I’ve taught to thousands of students that actually sticks. I even turned it into a song to help kids remember it in real-life situations.

Here are the three main reasons people are mean:

• They’re trying to bother you → Brush it off
• They’re joking with you → Laugh it off
• They’re hurt by you → Ask why and apologize

When kids understand the motivation, they don’t take things personally. They respond with confidence instead of emotion.

One of my favorite moments in this video is when Jackson told me he hoped someone would bully him at camp… just so he could practice his skills. That’s what happens when kids feel prepared instead of powerless.

If you’re a teacher, parent, counselor, or coach, you can use this right away with the kids you work with. Show them the clip, talk through the three motivations, and help them build real-life resilience.

Thanks for watching and supporting what I do.
