When Public Health Groups Oppose the Truth

Shane Killian Podcast 4 days ago

Description

The FDA authorized Swedish Match to market Zyn nicotine pouches, saying they have a massively reduced risk of lung cancer and other ailments—but the American Lung Association called the decision "appalling."

Why would an organization about lung health oppose informing smokers that switching completely from combustible cigarettes to nicotine pouches may reduce lung cancer and CPOD?

Because they're NOT a health agency. They're prohibitionists.

But honest risk assessments are beneficial and even necessary to public health! And if withholding evidence discourages smokers from switching away from harmful cigarettes, then what does the ALA think they're achieving?

I discuss the difference between cigarettes and tobacco-free nicotine pouches, the concept of tobacco harm reduction, and the debate over whether public health organizations should communicate relative risk honestly—even when the message involves nicotine products.

Once again, you can rely on me to force the truth out of politics!
