While natural beekeepers prefer not to feed, extreme weather or a lack of forage can leave a colony struggling. If you decide to feed your bees, you must do it before the weather drops below fifty degrees because bees will not drink liquid feed in the cold.
We recommend checking their honey stores in August. If they need food, create a syrup using two parts white granulated sugar and one part warm water. Never use brown or raw sugar, as bees cannot digest it properly. You can even add a crushed vitamin C tablet to match the natural acidity of real nectar. Finally, we show you exactly how to place different feeders inside a Langstroth, Warre, or Top Bar hive.
