Description
A vessel loaded in warm conditions can sail into colder waters carrying warm, moisture-rich air in its hold. The hull follows the cooling sea temperature, while the air inside remains warmer and more humid for much longer.
Once the steel structure drops below the air’s dew point, water forms on the hull, deckhead, and underside of hatch covers. The droplets build up and eventually fall onto whatever is stowed beneath them: this is ship sweat.
