Description
Shame is visceral. It lives in the physical body.
When you are triggered, your breath speeds up. Your throat tightens. Your shoulders rise. Your internal organs contract, and the whole body prepares to fight, flee or fold. Then, very often, you reach for the thing you have learned will change how you feel: your phone, a cigarette, alcohol, rage, self-harm or another familiar disorder.
But there are other choices.
In this short video, I teach a simple seated stretch that combines movement, twisting and deep breathing to help you interrupt the stress response and return to your body.
You can do it sitting cross-legged on the floor or upright on a dining or office chair. Move within your own comfortable range, breathe deeply and notice what changes.
You do not have to obey the trigger.
You can take back your brain, your mind and your body.
My book, *Shame: The Path Out of Hell*, explores the relationship between shame, the body, trauma and the ways we try to escape how we feel.
