Shame is not just an emotion. It is a state of dysregulation. It is a hell state within the self.
In this video, I explore shame as a biblical emotion, because the language of shame is so often the language of absolution, redemption, forgiveness and salvation.
Shame makes us feel broken, bad, toxic, contaminated, unlovable, unwanted, irredeemable. And when we are in that state, we often act in, act out, self-harm, harm others, or pass the shame on.
Stephen Levine wrote: “Hell is your resistance.” I have worked with that sentence for years. Because shame is an internal state of self-rejection. Shame is hell held inside the body.
My ask is this: let us name shame. Let us understand it. Let us stop passing it on.
