Description
Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a poisonous gas that has no color, odor, or taste, making it impossible to detect without proper equipment. It is produced when carbon-based fuels do not burn completely, including natural gas, propane, gasoline, diesel, wood, charcoal, heating oil, and kerosene. Around homes and buildings, CO can come from furnaces, boilers, gas water heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, gas ovens, generators, vehicles in attached garages, blocked chimneys, damaged vents, and other fuel-burning appliances. CO alarms are important because they can provide a warning to this deadly gas, helping identify a possible problem before it becomes a more serious life safety hazard.
