Volusia County, FL -- On Saturday 5/29, a License Plate Reader alerted deputies to a stolen Ford Escape traveling eastbound into the area.
When a deputy attempted a traffic stop on SR 40, the SUV took off and drove through the median and headed into oncoming traffic lanes.
After two stop stick hits, the vehicle drove into the parking lot at Riverbend Community Church, and the two occupants bailed out.
Deputies set up a perimeter, and after an extensive search, both driver and passenger were apprehended by K-9 units.
One of the defendants (Zykieus Hester, 19, Ocala) was in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun magazine.
While the handgun itself wasn't immediately located, deputies returned the following day to search the brush again. This time, K-9 Jago led deputies straight to the gun, which came back reported stolen out of Marion County.
Deputies believe both Hester and his co-defendant (age 17, also from Ocala) were headed toward the large Memorial Day weekend crowds present in Daytona Beach at the time of the incident.
Hester was charged with grand theft firearm, principal to grand theft of a motor vehicle, and resisting an officer without violence.
The 17-year-old defendant was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, and resisting an officer without violence.
Both defendants were released from the Volusia County Branch Jail after each posted $5,500 bail.
