Description
Eighty-four years after his death, he's finally home!!!!!
We are humbled and honored to serve his family!
U.S. Army Air Forces Pvt. Lowell C. Akers, who died at age 21 as a prisoner of war during World War II, has been accounted for as of Sept. 23, 2025.
Akers was assigned to the First Platoon, 680th Ordnance Company (Aviation Pursuit), when Japanese forces invaded the Philippine Islands in December 1942. Fighting raged until Bataan fell on April 9, 1942, followed by the surrender of Corregidor Island on May 6, 1942.
Akers was among the thousands of U.S. and Filipino troops captured when American forces on Bataan surrendered. He survived the brutal 65-mile Bataan Death March, only to be held afterward at Cabanatuan POW Camp #1 — a camp that would claim more than 2,500 American lives before the war's end.
Historical and camp records show Akers died of malaria on Nov. 14, 1942. He was buried among his fellow prisoners in the camp cemetery, in Common Grave 723. He is now home and will be laid to rest with his parents later this week!!!!!
