📍 Sobuj Bari
Today's journey began at Sobuj Bari, where we were invited into the home of Souvik Banerjee for an unforgettable Bengali feast. Deeply connected to the history and culture of Murshidabad, Souvik has lovingly restored his ancestral home into Sobuj Bari, a place where history, culture and heartfelt hospitality come together to offer guests an authentic experience of the region.
After a warm welcome and some refreshments, we stepped into the kitchen with Mira ji as she prepared lunch. We watched her cook Aam Murgi, Chingri Bhapa, Ilish Bhapa, Chaal Potol and freshly steamed Bhaat, while several other dishes had already been prepared earlier to preserve their traditional cooking process. As the aromas filled the kitchen, we also discovered the culinary traditions that had been passed down through generations in Souvik's family, where every recipe carried a story and every meal was an expression of love.
Soon, it was time to gather around the table for an extraordinary Bengali feast. The spread included Bhaat, Aam Dal, Shukto, Jhuri Aalu Bhaja, Bori Bhaja, Macher Dimer Bora, Narkoler Bora, Mochar Ghonto, Aam Murgi, Ilish Bhapa, Kumro Pata Diye Chingri Bhapa and Aamer Chutney.
What made this meal truly special was the freshness of every ingredient. The fish was fresh, the vegetables were locally sourced and the seasonal mangoes found their way into several dishes, adding a beautiful summer flavour to the meal. Beyond the food, it was the stories, memories and affection with which every dish was served that made this lunch so deeply satisfying. It was one of those meals that stayed with us long after it was over.
As evening approached, we prepared a bowl of fresh Jhalmuri and enjoyed it with a cup of Lal Cha before heading out for a peaceful cruise on the Bhagirathi River. Drifting along the river offered a different perspective of Murshidabad and allowed us to appreciate the city's timeless charm while listening to fascinating stories about its past.
We then continued exploring Berhampore and came across a group of locals enjoying a game of carrom. It was wonderful to see how deeply the game is woven into everyday life here, bringing together people of all ages who gathered around the board with enthusiasm, friendly banter and a shared love for the game.
Our next stop was the Indian Coffee House in Berhampore, where we enjoyed the iconic Mutton Kabiraji before making our way to Jhalmisti Food Court at Mohan Mall to experience the city's contemporary food scene. We savoured dishes like Mutton Rezala, Mango Chicken Kebab, Bhetki Kabiraji and several other delicacies. Equally enjoyable were the conversations with the passionate people behind these ventures, whose stories added another memorable layer to the experience.
We ended the day with a chilled glass of beer at one of Berhampore's oldest bars, reflecting on a day filled with unforgettable food, warm hospitality and meaningful conversations.
Join us as we experienced Murshidabad through its homes, its kitchens, its people and the traditions that continue to keep its rich culinary heritage alive.
