And for this reason too, the more than 200 earthquakes recorded since last Friday have prompted the Greek government's preparations: closing schools and ports, sending in special firefighting teams and rescue dog units under the rubble, and increasing flights to and from the island to ensure the rapid evacuation of residents.
The precautionary measure, the Ministry of Civil Protection assures, is also because the seismic activity, according to Greek experts, would be of a tectonic and not volcanic nature. Which remind us, however, that the island is not only a tourist paradise, but also home to one of the most active, and potentially dangerous, underwater volcanoes in the Mediterranean.
The seismic tremors of these days began on January 24 and have intensified since last Friday, with about 380 tremors recorded in the entire period and more than 200 over the weekend alone. The tremors have so far never exceeded magnitude 4.9, but their frequency suggests the risk of stronger earthquakes, which could trigger potentially dangerous tsunamis for all the islands in the area. And that is why the situation is being carefully monitored, although the government guarantees that there is no danger at the moment. The most powerful earthquake to hit the island in recent times was in 1956, when it reached magnitude 7.2 and caused the death of 53 people and the collapse of a third of the island's buildings.
