The shoot of my reproduction of the opening scene of 2010’s The Social Network went much better than expected. Throughout the second half of the semester, this was the assignment that I was stressing about the most. I almost expected everything to go wrong, just like in the opening scene of 1995’s Living in Oblivion. But, by a miracle, at the last minute, I got all my required cast and crew and everyone showed up on shooting day. They included my actors, my AD, my DP, and my sound recordist, who was, by far, the most experienced person on the set, with all sorts of Hollywood- standard sound gadgets and gizmos hanging around his neck. We also completed shooting much sooner than expected. We checked the equipment out at 2pm and I expected to check the equipment in at 5:30. We ended up checking in at 4.
When I was editing my first cut, I noticed more and more how much Colin, who played Mark, was struggling to say his lines and often frowning. I came to actually appreciate that because it emphasized Mark’s underdeveloped social and interpersonal skills. It also heightened the impression that he suffered from autism, a mental disorder I am familiar with. I have met many people throughout my life who suffered from high-functioning and low-functioning autism and Colin’s performance very much reminded me of them.
Dora played Erica extremely well. She emulated the sweet, kind, easy-to-fall-for girl next door that the script describes with precision.
I was determined to make my movie look and sound as professional and cinematic as possible. I even went to the trouble of giving my movie a 2.39:1 aspect ratio and a 5.1 surround sound mix.
