Why do woodworking joints end up sloppy even when measurements say otherwise?

For years, I blamed my saw. But the real problem wasn't _really_ ...it was how I was looking at my layout lines.

In this Make Things Simplified episode, we'll look at why carpenter pencils, mechanical pencils, and Kiridashi knives all create different references, and how those references affect what your cuts will look like.

I also compared a Kiridashi knife to a utility knife, as well as a mechanical pencil under a microscope, to look at how line thickness affects layout accuracy. I think it proves conclusively why scoring a line can dramatically fix joinery issues.

Whether you're cutting dovetails, bridle joints, tenons, or other precision joinery, if we understand where the cut actually begins it can help us build tighter, more accurate joints.
