Description
If you need to make a cut that’s flush to the top of your stock…you turn to a flush-cutting saw, right? These saws are both the answer and the bane of woodworking. They can cut absolutely flush to the top of your stock…but depending on the saw, that can come at a price.
Last time, I received this comment. But the truth is, not all flush-cut saws are designed the same way. Some have teeth set on both sides, others have teeth set away from the finished surface, and some have no set at all.
That means that after the teeth are created, each tooth is bent away from the center out…which creates a kerf and makes it easier for the blade to pass through the stock.
If the teeth are set toward your finished surface, they can scratch it as you cut.
The good news is that you can get around this with a couple options. To use the saw you already have, grab a refrigerator magnet and place it on the face. This forces the teeth to stay high away from the surface. If, for some reason, you don’t have a refrigerator magnet, you still have an ace in your sleeve. A playing card will work almost as well, minus the magnetism. Follow up with a chisel to clean anything left behind.
Finally, if you’re tired of the kerf issue and don’t want to be bothered with magnets, you can grab an inexpensive flush cut blade from Amazon. It took me some time to find this, but the teeth on this saw blade are flat, meaning your cut will be clean without any additional items. Now that can make them harder to use as you don’t have the kerf, but you’ll avoid the scratches.
