Description
Don't let this happen to you. Having a big bin full of packages of nuts, bolts, and screws can make finding the right fastener tedious, taking time away from actually making things.
About 15 years ago, I built this rack to organize my screws and small hardware, and it's still one of my favorite most used storage projects in the shop. Everything is organized and within easy reach. With 70 different types of fasteners, I've basically got my own little hardware store.
But if you're just starting a shop, buying storage containers can get expensive. This little container alone costs about $3. Multiply that by 70, and you're looking at over $200, and that doesn't even include the shelving.
Fortunately, you don't have to spend that kind of money.
Over the years, I've reused all sorts of containers. I've got peanut containers that a family member saved for me, peanut butter jars, and even an entire storage system given to me by a friend whose research department at Purdue University apparently drank a LOT of coffee.
But if you don't have a collection of empty containers lying around, here's a cheap alternative.
Water bottles.
Locally, I can buy a 24-pack of 16-ounce water bottles for about $3.50. Four packages gives me 96 storage containers for just $14.
Dump the water out, make slushies, whatever you want. For fourteen bucks, you've got a permanent storage solution you can use over and over again. Or a temporary one until you build something else.
And because the bottles sit horizontally in the rack, the caps give me the perfect place for labels. I can see exactly what size screw I need without even removing a bottle.
If you're interested in trying this yourself, I've created free plans and a step-by-step video on my website showing how to build a simple rack from a 1x4 that holds a dozen bottles. I've even included a free PDF with labels you can print for your new storage containers.
