The water reaches his chest now. Not regular water—this thick, brown soup that's been swallowing him inch by inch for the past six days. Paul Templer can't feel his legs anymore. They disappeared somewhere below the surface of this narrow pit, sucked into a grip so absolute that every tiny movement pulls him deeper. The jungle screams around him—howler monkeys, insects, birds he can't name—but down here in this vertical shaft of earth and water, he exists in a tomb of mud. His arms shake as he holds himself against the walls. If he lets go, if his strength finally gives out, the quicksand will take the rest of him.
