The sand is in her mouth. In her nose. In her eyes. Mauro Prosperi can't move her arms. She can't move her legs. She's buried up to her neck in a Moroccan sand dune, and the weight of the desert is crushing her chest so hard she can barely breathe. Above her, the sun is a white hammer beating down. Below her, something in her spine has snapped. She can feel it. A grinding, disconnected sensation somewhere in her lower back. She's been running for six days across the Sahara Desert in what's supposed to be the toughest footrace on Earth. Now she's going to die here, alone, with sand filling her lungs.
