Description
On October 16, 1973, the Nobel Committee announced its decision to award Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Vietnamese diplomat Lê Đức Thọ that year's Peace Prize, for negotiating an end to the war in Vietnam. While Kissinger accepted the award, his Vietnamese co-recipient refused it on the basis that peace had not yet been achieved.
The decision sparked immediate controversy: two of the Nobel Committee's members resigned in protest of the decision, and the New York Times published an editorial with the title "Nobel War Prize".
