Description
Has the algorithm become the ultimate gatekeeper in Hip Hop? I recently realized I missed a new album from one of my top five producers, Black Milk, despite being fully immersed in the music space. This led to a deeper conversation about the death of the blog era and a response to a recent "No Labels Necessary" video about how Instagram is fundamentally changing how music is marketed.
Reflecting on a recent segment from New Old Heads episode 486, I break down the "repost culture" crackdown, why aggregators and bloggers are still vital for niche artists, and the dangerous shift from optimizing for culture to optimizing for algorithms. We look back at the distinct signals of the blog era and why the future of music might require artists to build their own media ecosystems just to survive.

BDTB is a Hip Hop music and culture amplifier. Starting out as a Hip Hop blog sharing dope Hip Hop-related music from 2009-2016, with over 12,000 posts amplifying Hip Hop music and artists, the blog then switched platforms to focus on music playlisting and music and news uploads on YouTube (our Turn Off Your Radio playlist started in 2013 and is still active). We then launched a weekly Hip Hop culture podcast called the New Old Heads in 2016 with a focus on Hip Hop deep dives and news. BDTB has actively supported and collaborated with many creators in the Hip Hop space, been very active in boosting the Indianapolis Hip Hop and beat scene, conducted multiple interviews with Hip Hop voices and artists, and continued to curate impactful and important Hip Hop media.
