Something my mother once told me years ago stuck in my mind and has changed the way I look at many things. She’s always been one of the most loving people I’ve ever known, and everyone in my family has looked up to her for that for as long as I can remember. Late one night in the quiet winter of the northern countryside she said to me “when you have children of your own just remember that love is spelled T-I-M-E.”
I thought I understood the truth of what she meant all those years ago, but it’s taken me growing older and experiencing great loss begin to see the depth of what she meant.
Time is the greatest wealth we have, and when someone I love chooses to spend that time for me, it is more valuable than anything that can be bought. Even a simple hand made Christmas card can be a vessel for a small bit of that highest valued resource. Worldly goods will come and go after all, but Time spells love. So now I try to remind myself that in the end, that’s what they will cherish and remember.
