The Immortal (Genesis) Playthrough

Description

A playthrough of Electronic Arts' 1991 action-adventure game for the Sega Genesis, The Immortal.

I remember Will Harvey's The Immortal being a huge deal back in its day. For a good year or so, you couldn't open a gaming magazine without seeing it featured in an ad or a hint column, and every version of the game was met with glowing reviews. Its impeccable presentation, the incredible sense of dread and isolation it evoked, and the way it combined environmental puzzles with arcade-style combat sequences all came together to make for an unforgettable experience.

It was originally made for the Apple IIgs, and it was ported to all of the popular platforms. The IIgs, Amiga, Atari ST, and NES versions were released in November of 1990, and the Genesis and Dos versions followed in November of 1991.

I already spoke about the story and the gameplay in my write-up for the NES version (https://youtu.be/gBfLturf_GA), so I'll avoid rehashing that here.

The Genesis port of The Immortal is an interesting mash-up of the other versions. It includes all eight stages from the computer versions; the graphics in the isometric portions closely resemble the Atari ST's; and the music, controls, and battle scenes have been adapted from the NES game. Some of the graphics have been reworked with more color, too, though the Genesis port is probably best known for the spectacularly gruesome ways in which your wizard finishes off his opponents. Heads get lopped off and blown up, petrified bodies are smashed, skin melts off bone - each one is a sight to behold and a perfect reward for hard-won progress.

This is an excellent version of an excellent game, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for something that's tense, challenging, and genuinely creepy.
