Historically, and precisely because of the low efficiency of chemical reactions – and thus the insurmountable limitation of chemical engines – this lead Robert W. Bussard to conceive of the Bussard interstellar ramjet.
Bussard concluded, that – the only way to travel through interstellar space, was by means of extracting, or rather, scooping energy – energy in the form of hydrogen gas, to then be fused and thrusted at great velocities. Fused, because fusion engines – are much more energetic – are many times more efficient than chemical rocket engines.
Unfortunately, it was later found that the drag (resistance) – produced by the ramscoop interacting with the hydrogen gas, was too great for the engine to become practical. = Perhaps, if some kind of MHD (a different kind of magnetic scoop) was employed, one may have solved the drag problem, nonetheless…
