Suspended Animation | #shorts
With or without faster-than-light travel suspended animation is necessary for four primary reasons:
1. Travel times will remain relatively long even with FTL travel – at 100 c it would take a bit more than 4 months to travel 35 ly.
2. Spacecraft must minimize their mass – hibernating folks require less “stuff” since there is no need to eat or drink then metabolic states are at a minimum, like a hibernating bear.
3. Based on the latest research, FTL travel is likely to be painful as it will unavoidably generate significant very brief bursts of radiation, including gravitational waves within the ‘warp bubble’.
4. In the event that a starship suffers a major drive failure emergency, this would force the crew to return home slower than light, suspended animation would allow them to survive the long return.
