Children recovering from home abuse are studied at the University of Colorado Medical Center by a special form of psychiatrists, pediatricians, and social workers.
The battered child, victim of abuse in the home, is subject of this compassionate documentary, filmed primarily at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver, where an experimental "Battered Child" team has been formed. This team, consisting of psychiatrists, pediatricians and social workers, studies the causes of such abuses and provides therapy for the children affected mentally. The idea of the team is a direct result of the findings of two University pediatricians, Dr. C Henry Kempe and Dr. Ray E. Helfer, who developed the battered child syndrome in their revealing book “The Battered Child,” and who are seen in the documentary.
Dr. Kempe reports on several cases at the Medical Center and holds intensive conversations with some of the mothers who have abused their children; he also talks to the few children who are old enough, and sufficiently receptive, to comment on their feelings. Judges in Denver County are also asked to discuss the legal ramifications of the battered child syndrome. The reporter on the program, who also interviews therapists in this area, is the late Pulitzer Prize-winner Lois Wille of the Chicago Daily News.
