This interesting film is about a village in Devon, England in 2010 - 2017. It is about how we live, work, play, farm, celebrate, learn, and lots more in this rural Devon parish in these early years of the twenty first century. It’s a video ‘Time Capsule’.
The film has no music, no voice-over, no story. It speaks for itself and is a busy record of what goes on in the parish through the year, from New Year’s Eve at the Catherine Wheel to the Boxing Day meet of the local hunt.
Hemyock is largely a parish of farms with a fairly large village in the centre and there is a lot of farming in the film, not all pretty but what actually happens. Cattle die, calves are born, herds have to be TB tested (Tuberculin), the bull chases the vet, the lambing ewe needs help. Horses need their teeth rasped and to be shod and cattle too sometimes need their feet trimmed.
There’s a funeral, a couple of weddings, a parish council meeting, a tractor rally and a cycle race through the village, the annual Monument Run, a visit to the school, the bin men at work and some demolition. …. and much, much more.
This film should be kept for posterity and not lost like the cine film villagers remember being made in the 1950s; how we would love to look at that now.
I had enormous fun filming the goings-on in this very busy village. Editing took hundreds of hours. My computer groaned and froze. A date was set for a show in the parish hall. Two hundred and fifty people came to see it and another hundred and fifty later in the year with the proceeds (£5 a ticket) going towards a proposed Calf-Club sculpture. The film was much enjoyed and I hope you like it too.
Sadly, it isn’t possible to name everyone in the film and as time goes on identities will inevitably be lost but I am hugely grateful to all those who allowed me to film them, from my horse, my bike or my feet, usually without me asking first. Without you all there would be no film.
