While we are inundated with stories about scandals and shocking events in the US, VPRO Backlight looks the other way: to the East. Because something startling is happening in Germany. Not only did the 'Alternative for Germany' (Alternative für Deutschland, AfD) become one of the largest parties in the elections, but since early May 2025 the entire organization has been labeled by the security service as far-right and a danger to democracy.
Recently, numerous Germans protested for a ban on the party. But is banning a party democratic? And how does Germany's past and present determine the future of Europe?
