Staff Sgt. Irvin C. Ellingson was a U.S. Army Air Forces radar observer during World War II. In April 1945, his B-29 Superfortress was shot down over Tokyo. He survived and was captured, but tragically died in a fire at the Tokyo Military Prison the next month.

After nearly 80 years, scientists finally identified Ellingson's remains using modern DNA testing in 2025. In June 2026, he returned home for a final burial in his hometown of Dahlen, North Dakota.
