Witnessing a Rare Rainforest Moment: Sketching Tree Frogs

I was deep in the tropical jungle of Cape York, far north Queensland, just after a heavy tropical rain. The forest was steaming, and the air was thick with that perfect post-rain scent when I saw something truly remarkable.

In this video, I’m opening up my nature journal to revisit a moment that happened right by a muddy roadside puddle. I witnessed graceful tree frogs climbing down from the canopy to spawn, a rare sight to see in the middle of the day.

Join me in the studio as I add watercolor to these field sketches and recount the race against time (and mosquitoes!) to capture this fleeting world before it vanished.

In this video:

The surprise discovery of frogs spawning in a roadside puddle.
The "race against time" reality of nature journaling.
Adding watercolor to capture the vibrant greens and yellows of the canopy.
Nature operates on a scale we often fail to notice. Entire worlds appear and vanish in a muddy puddle after a storm, and I feel so lucky I was there to witness this one.
