Description
This video is a supporting document to Saruni Basecamp’s SKAL 2025 Sustainable Tourism Awards application.
Saruni Basecamp is a pioneering conservation tourism brand operating across six community-owned conservancies in Kenya. Through an integrated 4C model—Conservation, Community, Culture, and Commerce—Saruni Basecamp has demonstrated that sustainable tourism can be both impactful and commercially viable.
The organization protects 1.2 million acres of land, supports over 6,600 indigenous landowners, and employs 86% local staff. Its efforts include biodiversity protection, carbon footprint reduction through renewable energy and waste management, and extensive reforestation. Social sustainability is embedded through cultural sensitivity, empowerment of over 250 Maasai women via the Basecamp Maasai Brand, and critical infrastructure development like dams and health clinics.
Saruni Basecamp's story exemplifies how ethical tourism can regenerate ecosystems, empower communities, and preserve culture while delivering unforgettable travel experiences.
