Description
On this episode of the Mind Your Farm Business podcast, host Shaun Haney explores why cybersecurity has become an essential pillar of farm risk management alongside weather and markets.
Featuring Eugene Ng and Marvin Slingerland of MNP, this episode delves into how cybercriminals actively exploit trust-based rural relationships through fraudulent invoices, compromised email accounts, and AI-driven scams.
The danger extends beyond financial loss to operational shutdown, too, as Slingerland says ransomware can halt critical infrastructure, such as automated feeding systems and robotic milkers. Ng highlights that legislation such as Bill C-8 could soon require agricultural producers and suppliers connected to critical infrastructure to meet strict cybersecurity standards.
Both experts say farm managers must defend their operations by cataloguing connected devices, segmenting operational technology from personal networks, and slowing down to independently verify payment details by phone.
