Description
On Saturday, July 18, 2020 at about 2:06 PM, Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff STARR 3 helicopter was requested by Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (CON Fire) for an outside assist regarding a stranded hiker in Black Diamond Mines.
While fire fighters hiked to the location, STARR 3 responded and found the hiker who apparently was feeling dizzy while hiking. He then left the trail and cut across the hillside to make it back to the parking lot sooner. He fell in a steep area as a result of heat exhaustion and had to hang onto a barbed wire fence to prevent himself from falling further.
CON Fire requested a short haul rescue because of the hiker’s condition, steep terrain, and lack of trails in the area.
Tactical Flight Officer Deputy Sheriff M. Ireland and Air Support Unit Sergeant M. Rodriquez short hauled the hiker to an awaiting ambulance for treatment.
